"Coming Out, Coming Home III": Southern California’s South Asian LGBTIQQ Community Speaks Out

The Satrang community and friends gathered again this year for what has become an awaited annual event. "Coming Out Coming Home III", the third event of its kind was held at the Southern California Library (SCL) in Los Angeles on Sunday October 16th, 2011. This reading was the result of a six-week writing workshop held this past Spring. Following the success of last few year’s workshop and readings, Satrang funded this event to provide members of the South Asian LGBTIQQ community a platform to share their experiences in a safe and creative environment.

Facilitated by theatre artist and former Satrang Board Member, D'Lo (www.dlocokid.com) the workshop has become a space for attendees to go deep - excavating and crafting their personal stories. Reflecting on last year’s event, he says, "Nearly all the participants came to the workshop saying they didn’t know how to write," said D’Lo, "yet what was proven was that not only could they write beautifully, but their personal stories were intensely powerful. The stories evoked tears, laughs and a standing ovation from the room full of family members, friends, partners and allies."

At the reading event, this year’s workshop participants shared their stories spanning topics from integrating their spirituality and sexuality, coming out to family members and finding community. "It is estimated that there are, 30,000 LGBTIQQ South Asians living in Southern California. Because of these findings, we understand that many of our community are immigrants who are closeted or in isolation," said one participant. There is no place for them to be "out" and South Asian - the cultural reverence for "silence" is strong especially when it comes to situations and subjects that could affect one's standing in either their cultural community or their employment status. "In our community, we know for a fact that many people suffer from mental health and thoughts of suicide because of the homophobia." said D’Lo, "It’s sad that people don’t feel that they can just be who they are and be loved by their family and community for being authentic in their identities."

Satrang would like to continue this powerful project in the coming year with all the support from community members. Satrang is thankful to DLo, all the participants, and the Southern California Library (SCL) for their support of this event. The SCL has been home to many of the rich beginnings of movements – starting with meetings, lectures, classes, and political organizing. The Library seeks to deepen its commitment to art as a critical element of social change by hosting such events.

Eid / Diwali Gala 2011

On October 22, Satrang hosted it's annual Eid/Diwali celebration in the heart of 'Little India'. The venue for our event was the Haveli restaurant in Artesia. Every table in the room was adorned with gorgeous floral arrangements done by Aisha Malik. Saqib's lighting provided the perfect backdrop for all the Satrangis to show off their finest festive outfits. Miss Gina'licioious' Singh entertained the guests as they enjoyed a delicious feast served up by chef's at Haveli. The mouth watering menu comprised of : samosas, kabobs, lamb and chicken curry, malai kofta, channa masala, naan and last, but not the least, gulaab jamun.

As our guests were on the verge of slipping into a food coma, it was time for our "short and sweet" culture show. Rupen started the evening with a soulful rendition of ‘Gali mein aaj chand nikala' from the film ‘Zakhm'. As he got us all thinking about the 'eid-ka-chand', a bright little blonde starlet in a sexy off-shoulder purple gown was putting her heals on. Ladies and Gentlemen, we present you Etta 'Rajeshwari' James. That was our Diwali 'fire cracker' shimmering oh-so seductively across the room. And saving our newest performer for the last, Gaby Esser enthralled us with a modern dance and bollywood fusion number set to 'soch ka pehla kadam' composed by Kiran Ahluwalia. The song translates 'the first step of a thought will itself be a guide' and fittingly we had Mr. Manoj Kumar taking his 'first step' on the stage as our new Satrang president. He thanked the outgoing board: Vikas Sood, Komal Bhojwani, Salman Husainy and Ken, for their tireless efforts over the years and presented the new board: Manoj Kumar, Sheena Malhotra, Abhijeet, Tony, Parind Shah and our team of consultants: Aisha, Raja Bhattar, Gina Singh and Salman Husainy, who we simply refuse to let go.

That marked the end of the Act I, but Miss Gina'licious' wasn't about to let anyone escape just yet. With just one whistle from her, Tony put on his DJ headphones and we had munni, sheela, pappu, chammak challo, billo rani, chandramukhi, and paro leave the silver screen and descend on the dance floor in their full inner-queer South Asian splendor. We may not have the budget to bring the stars of Bollywood to our Gala, but that evening, you really wouldn't even notice as Satrangis channeled Bollywood performativity and dances for the better side of a non stop 3 hours. As the night got colder, the temperatures inside the Haveli kept rising, fuelled by drinks, laughter and the warm company of life long friends and loved ones! That's what Eid and Diwali is about and we thank everyone who shared this wonderful evening with us. We dearly missed everyone who could not make it there. We hope you had equally wonderful time with your friends and family. But next year, please save some time for us!
